Over a three-year period, the Ronald McDonald House Montreal had to turn away more than 1,000 families; it was filled to capacity every night. The expanded 50-bedroom House, which sits behind Sainte-Justine Hospital, now opens their doors wider to give over 1,000 families a year a place to stay during their toughest times – when a child is seriously ill.
The new energy-efficient home is 44,000 square feet, with a computer room, playrooms and teen room. Outside is a playground and patio. With 50 families sharing the spaces, there’s always someone to lend an ear or a shoulder. And privacy can be found in the bedrooms and quiet areas when it’s needed.
In addition to the 11 staff, 20 volunteers make the place a home and a welcome environment for kids and parents alike. Fresh baking wafts through the House; they decorate for the seasons; they have meal programs; they have a knitting group making blankets for each sick child.
