Ronald McDonald House BC has been a temporary home to more than 11,000 families since it opened in 1983. It’s in the beautiful South Shaughnessy neighbourhood and a quick five-minute drive to the BC Children’s Hospital. A spacious garden and a child’s playhouse are available to families, as are two family vans if transport is needed.
Programs like Breakfast Express, Home for Dinner and Arts & Crafts, run by the House’s 150 volunteers, help make stays a bit easier on both parents and kids. Considering the average stay is an astounding 90 days here, everyone appreciates different ways to take a break.
While 400 families stay every year, the House has to turn many away. The waiting list usually has 240 families on it, and the average wait time is 21 days for those who do manage to get a spot. The good news is there’s an expansion in the works. The House will be increasing its bedroom count from 13 to 73. A fundraising campaign is underway to raise the money needed for expansion.
