Ronald McDonald House Southern Alberta stands on two acres of land next to the Alberta Children’s Hospital, which means parents only have a short walk to visit their children staying in the hospital.

An on-site Education Coordinator works with families to provide schooling tailored to each child’s individual needs. A Calgary Board of Education school located within minutes of the House is available for child placement. And should the need arise, teachers are also available to visit the House or hospital. This educational partnership won the 2008 Mayor’s Excellence in Education Award.

More than 1,250 volunteer positions help the 23 staff members to offer families a host of programs, such as Let’s Do Lunch (bagged lunches to take to the hospital) and Home for Dinner.

While the operating cost for each family’s stay is $241 per night, families are only asked to pay $12 per night. The House has a special fund should even that be unaffordable, which covers hotel costs if they have to turn a family away.
