Ronald McDonald House Charities Canada is committed to supporting Canadian families with sick children through Ronald McDonald Houses and their programs, including the Ronald McDonald Family Room program.
The First Canadian Ronald McDonald House opened in Toronto in 1981. And the national, charitable foundation created to support Ronald McDonald Houses (known today as Ronald McDonald House Charities Canada) was founded in 1982.
Today there are 14 Ronald McDonald Houses in Canada, providing more than 10,000 families a home away from home each year.
By 2014, 10 Ronald McDonald Houses will undergo a complete new build or renovation. We will also have built two new Ronald McDonald Houses: one in St John’s and one in Red Deer. This will take our bedroom count from 217 to 478 bedrooms – offering more than double the space to serve the families of sick children.
In 2007, the first Ronald McDonald Family Room in Canada was built. Today, there are six Ronald McDonald Family Rooms in hospitals across the country: in Winnipeg, London, Hamilton, Mississauga, Halifax and Moncton.
As part of McDonald’s Restaurants of Canada’s commitment to Ronald McDonald Houses, they cover all of the administrative and operating costs for Ronald McDonald House Charities Canada, the foundation that supports the Houses. So 100% of every dollar donated goes directly to Ronald McDonald Houses and their programs.
Since January 2004, McDonald’s Canada and its Owner/Operators have donated 10 cents from the sale of every Happy Meal sold in Canada to Ronald McDonalds House Charities. To date, more than $34 million has been raised.
- Each Ronald McDonald House is a community House and is independently operated by a charitable organization. While each House receives financial and in-kind support from Ronald McDonald House Charities Canada, McDonald’s and McDonald’s suppliers, they also rely on support from individual donors, corporations, and charitable groups in their communities.
- Since beginning, Ronald McDonald House Charities Canada has awarded $67 million in grants to the Ronald McDonald Houses, Ronald McDonald Family Rooms and local children’s charities across our country. This has benefitted thousands of children in over 600 Canadian communities.
Please note: Due to the extraordinary growth of the Ronald McDonald Houses and Ronald McDonald Family Room Programs across Canada, as of August 2010, RMHC Canada no longer awards grants to local children's charities.
